HEALTHY LAND

We depend on nature, but we're stuck in old economic models that ignore the health of the ecosystems we rely on.

At Opportunity we see a future where purpose-led businesses grow wealth by restoring nature.

But we're not there yet. In some places, nature needs us to take a strong stand today, to protect what's left.

When half of our rivers are unswimmable and our unique biodiversity is at risk — it's time to set bottom-lines, as well as invest in the nature-positive economy of the future. That's why Opportunity will:

  • Increase conservation and biosecurity funding — with a particular focus on wetlands, native reforestation and other biodiversity-rich projects.
  • Improve water quality through strong regulation and independent oversight.
  • Support landowners to transition to high-value, low impact land uses through spatial planning, nature-positive landscape management practices and innovative technology that reduces pesticide and artificial fertiliser use.
  • Invest in breakthrough sectors like continuous cover native forestry and a nature market, where actions to improve biodiversity are rewarded.
  • Design a circular plastics economy aligned to the objectives of the New Plastics Economy Roadmap developed by the New Zealand plastics industry.
A farmer who builds up the soil, cleans up the water and brings the birds back should be paid for that work.

Native forest, wetlands and living soil hold this country together. Let’s fund them like the infrastructure they are.
