Statement on the situation in Gaza

The Opportunities Party believes in the fundamental right of Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace, dignity, and security.

We want to see an end to violence and suffering in the region. The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where over 56,000 Palestinians have been killed since 7 October 2023, underscores the urgent need for international action to break the cycle of violence.

We support calls for an immediate ceasefire and expect all parties to exercise restraint in the use of force and abide by international law. This includes enabling the transit of humanitarian aid and ending military action against civilian populations as well as the release of hostages. We particularly call on Israel, as the party with far greater military capacity, to adhere to these obligations, enable humanitarian access, and protect civilian lives. Above all, no conditions should be attached to any party immediately complying with the obligations of international humanitarian law and norms.

Sustainable peace will only be possible through meaningful dialogue and a commitment to justice and human rights on both sides. It will also require an enduring commitment from the international community to actively drive progress towards peace and refrain from support for belligerent acts.

We support the international aspiration for a two-state solution based on internationally recognised 1967 borders.

New Zealand should immediately and unconditionally formally recognise Palestinian statehood. This is consistent with our longstanding support for the two-state solution and Palestinian self-determination.
