Sam Plummer
Sam has seen the world from many perspectives. Raised on a beef and cropping farm in Central Hawkes Bay, Sam completing a university degree and worked in organisational development roles across both public and private sectors in New Zealand.
A transformative experience as a VSA volunteer in Cambodia led Sam to spend 15 years across Southeast Asia, working with international development agencies and NGOs on projects spanning democratic governance, public sector reform, health, and poverty reduction. These experiences strengthened his commitment to transparent, inclusive decision-making and the empowerment of communities.
Seven years ago, Sam and his family returned to New Zealand to reconnect with family and friends and enjoy the environment that shaped his early years. Today, heowns a small business in Taupō. Yet, his growing concern about the state of democracy in New Zealand inspired him to become active with Opportunity in 2022.
Sam is a passionate advocate for defending and strengthening democratic processes, ensuring that all communities have a voice and that political and economic decisions serve the common good. He champions the “re-democratization” of our economy, communities, and environment, believing that true progress comes when people have agency over their own lives.
When not reflecting on the possibilities of a more empowered society, Sam can be found standing waist-deep in one of Taupō’s many rivers, appreciating the beauty of nature and wondering why the trout won’t bite.
