Opportunity will defend Climate Change Commission from ACT
Opportunity says it would oppose ACT’s plan to abolish the Climate Change Commission and would use its influence in any National-led government to protect independent climate oversight.
“ACT is proposing to remove the independent climate watchdog and erode the role of experts in climate policy,” Opportunity Leader Qiulae Wong says.
“That’s not efficiency. That’s removing independent scrutiny.
“New Zealand needs a strong voice in Parliament that will stand up for the environment while supporting a productive economy. Opportunity will be that voice.
“If National needs Opportunity to form a government after the election, ACT should not expect to dismantle New Zealand’s climate institutions or wind back environmental progress.
“Independent advice is especially important when governments find it inconvenient.
“Opportunity will back practical, market-based climate action, clean technology and innovation.

"We will make sure environmental responsibility is central to any government we support. Good climate policy is good economic policy," says Wong.
