Netra Ghimire
Born and raised in a refugee camp in Nepal until the age of 11, Netra is proud to now call New Zealand home. His journey has been shaped by the kindness of everyday Kiwis he has met and a deep desire to give back to the country that gave his family a fresh start.
Netra is a high school teacher of Social Studies, Physical Education, and Financial Literacy, as well as a proud husband and father to an energetic two-year-old. Like many young families, stepping into home ownership opened his eyes to the real pressures everyday New Zealanders are facing - balancing mortgages, childcare, bills, and the rising cost of living despite working hard and spending responsibly.
Working closely with young people every day has shown him both the huge potential within the next generation and the growing disconnect many students feel towards school and their future. Too many young people spend their final years of school simply chasing credits rather than discovering meaningful skills, purpose, confidence, and direction. Netra believes we need stronger pathways into trades, industries, entrepreneurship, technology, and hands-on learning experiences that help students see the value they can bring to the world.
Sport, volunteering, and community have always been central parts of his life. Netra believes NZ’s strength has always come from ordinary people stepping up for one another. He is passionate about building healthier communities, creating stronger opportunities for young people, and bringing more long-term thinking into the way we lead and develop the country.
He believes NZ already has everything it needs to thrive - what we need now is leadership that empowers people, strengthens communities, and unlocks the full potential of Aotearoa New Zealand.
